I started working for Walla Walla Public Schools as a substitute teacher in October. After a few weeks I met a wonderful bilingual third grade teacher who needed a substitute while she went on maternity leave. I started teaching third grade at Prospect Point Elementary School right around Thanksgiving. I was teaching in English because the students were transitioning out of Spanish by that time. After Mrs. Moreno returned, I was hired to work with the ESL teacher at Prospect Point, leading small reading groups at all grade levels. It was so much fun! Thank you Prospect Point!

Me diverti tanto! Gracias Prospect Point!

Wonderful Prospect Point teachers and students
Maravillosos maestros e estudiantes de Prospect Point

Cinco de Mayo celebration with third graders

ESL 4th and 5th grade group

The first day of summer 2009 I found out I had been hired to teach fourth grade at Edison Elementary! This is amazing and exciting and an incredible blessing for many reasons:

1) It's extremely hard for teachers (and everyone else) to find jobs right now.

2) This school is a perfect fit for me - We are starting a dual-immersion Spanish program. In a few years I will most likely be teaching in Spanish! There will be a multicultural, multilingual focus at Edison throughout the entire school.

3) Some wonderful teaching friends that I met at Prospect Point will also be moving to Edison with me, as the bilingual program changes schools. They have been nothing but encouraging and supportive to me. Thank you! :)

4) Edison was a small school in a very old but classic building. They decided to build a new school building which is much bigger and is full of brand new technology! I am SO excited to learn about all the new toys I get to play with while I teach :)

5) I could go on and on about this new job... As you can tell I am EXCITED! God has blessed me so much - I am in the right place at the right time with the right people!

Edison under construction

It seems like yesterday that I was celebrating the arrival of 2007. Well, with the new year comes some newness for me, too. Well, kinda new. I bought a new car, got a new haircut, got a new camera for Christmas, and bought a new hard drive! (The old one crashed, so I've spent my vacation getting music from the sistahs. Yay for itunes cards, too!)

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=" com="" rebeccadtate="" 2008="" 5151152927493257890="">
The family is elemental. I am almost ready, but I never would have made it without the help of my parents and sisters. They took off work to come and help me set up for this year. Thanks to them my classroom looks AMAZING! I am really excited to teach Kindergarten - it will be an adventure! Especially with 31 students! Pray for me!

I could have built a little hut and lived there forever! White sand, warm water, the million colors of the ocean, the puffer fish, the green hills. Words can't describe it. I went on vacation to Colombia for about two weeks in July. I traveled with my good friend Karen, and my friends Audrey and Angie, who Karen and I were with in Paraguay. We stayed in Cartagena for a week, and then went to a little fishing village near Santa Marta. The village is called Taganga. Cartagena was a typical South American city with some OK beaches. We stayed in a nice apartment there and enjoyed the chiva party bus and the city sights. The highlight of the trip, however, was the time we spent in Taganga. We stayed in a really nice hostel, drank fresh exotic fruit juice every day, and then traveled to paradise one day. We paid for three tour guides to take us to a secluded beach where we could snorkel and just hang out. They caught some of the fish we were snorkeling with for our lunch and we had a great time. I will always remember that beautiful place!

In May I was blessed to co-lead a team of 12 college students on a missions trip to Venezuela. It was amazing! I made some wonderful friends there. I hope to return soon. I could write a book about what we did and who we were with on this trip, but I won't. We flew into Caracas and then traveled by bus to a city called Punta de Mata. We slept in the church in hammocks and worked with the church youth to evangelize and tell people about the church. One funny story: I came down with an allergic reaction to who knows what and my lips swelled up like I had botox injections! It got so bad that finally I had to go to the hospital and get an IV. Weird. We stayed a week with our friends in Punta de Mata and then moved on to Barcelona. We stayed in our hammocks on the roof of a church and went out to paint a church and then build another church out of mud, sticks, and rocks. What an experience. We did get to go to the beach one day as well. The best part of the trip was building friendships with people in Venezuela and on our team.

Back in the USA

Students I taught in 2006-2007
Alumnos que enseñé en 2006-2007

My time in South America passed too quickly... I came back to the states and experienced quite a bit of reverse culture shock, but I survived! I was blessed to live with two of my closest friends from college. I looked for a full-time teaching position, but was not able to find one. I began the masters degree program at Point Loma to work on finishing my "Clear" California teaching credential. I took a long term substitute position in southern San Diego and loved it there. I was teaching in a second grade class and stayed there for 5 months. Then I took a position at the same school for a third grade class. I was able to stay at that same school for the rest of the school year. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun! I was able to really see how the public school system in California works. While teaching at that school, I fell in love with southern San Diego and started my campaign to find a job in that area.

Uruguay

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

During Spring Break 2006, a group of teachers and I went on a little trip to Uruguay. We stayed a few days in Montevideo, and then went to a little town called Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia was very charming and really gave me a feel for the country of Uruguay. Uruguay seems to have a perfect mixture of the laid-back Brazilian culture and the old, European feel of places like Argentina. It was wonderful. We went on a bike ride through the town, stayed in a nice hostel, watched the sunset, sampled the food. Then we went on an overpriced Buquebus boat trip across the bay to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Most of us had been there before, but BsAs is a wonderful city to revisit. The trip to Uruguay completed my round of central and southern South America and it was a great last fling with friends from ACA.

Crazy kids, crazy teacher!
Niños locos, maestra loca!

This was another year of changes for ACA... I miss them (and ACA) terribly.

Bolivia

Copacabana, Bolivia - a town on Lake Titicaca
un pueblo cerca del Lago Titicaca

There is so much to see in Bolivia, but we were only able to be there for a little while... Even so, what we saw was amazing and beautiful. Lake Titicaca is huge! We first went to there while we were still in Peru, actually. We were able to visit the man-make floating reed islands of Uros. Amazing! When we crossed over into Bolivia, we went to Isla del Sol, an island on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. Once we were back on the mainland, we traveled to La Paz for a day and then to a dusty old town reminiscent of a western movie. The town is called Tupiza. In Tupiza we decided to take a tour on horseback of the surrounding countryside. Little did we know that we ended up taking the tour where you had to stay on the horse for SEVEN hours! We were in so much pain, but at least we had run out of cash (there wasn't an ATM in this town) and had to survive on crackers and orange soda for two days! Just another adventure! We celebrated New Year's Eve on a train on our way out of Bolivia.

The Inka Trail - Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

These four days, around Christmas 2004, were probably the most challenging and most amazing of my life. I pushed myself physically harder than I ever have (I know the hike isn't that bad, but I'm a wimp!), but it was all worth it! We, our group of about 10 tourists, hiked for 4 days and ended up in this beautiful city of Incan ruins. We saw ruins all along the way as well. We slept in tents and ate amazing food that was prepared for us by Peruvians. Peruvian porters also carried our stuff for us, for an extra fee. That was worth it, too! We had an amazing guide who shared with us a wealth of information on the flora and fauna of the "high mountain jungle," as well as the history of the Incan people. Incredible!

Peru

Cathedral in Arequipa Catedral en Arequipa

Peru is beautiful! Out of all the countries on our trip, I think Peru is the most beautiful... It is so green! The people are beautiful, too. We started our Peruvian adventure in Tacha, right across the border from Arica, Chile. We traveled (on a sketchy smuggler bus) up to Arequipa. We visited a beautiful, serene convent there. From Arequipa we went to Cuzco, the tourist capital of Peru. It is a lovely city, despite all the tourists. After hiking among the ruins around Cuzco, walking the Inka Trail, and visiting Machu Picchu, we headed down to Puno on Lake Titicaca. We went to Uros, the amazing man-made floating reed islands on the lake. I've never seen anything like Peru!

Nunca he visto algo como Peru!

Chile

Valparaiso

Chile... My time in this long western country was very short. We crossed from Argentina to Chile through the Andes Mountains. It was snowy and beautiful! Then we went down the treacherous road to Santiago de Chile. From there we saw Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. I remember Chile being the most developed country we went to... I also remember palta (like guacamole) and that they call hot dogs "completos" because they pile them high with toppings! From Santiago we went on a 30 hr bus trip through the Atacama desert - the driest place on earth!

Chile...

Argentina

La Boca, Buenos Aires

What can I say about Argentina!? I have been there many times, yet I feel like I have not seen half of it. I have only seen the part that is most like Paraguay (the northern part - Pampas) and Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is like a country in itself! I have never been to Europe, but I imagine Europe is something like Buenos Aires. How proud the Argentinos are of there country! And they have every right to be. It's wonderful. Karen, Stephanie and I started our South America Tour in Argentina in December of 2005.

These beautiful children were my first students ever! As soon as I walked in the door of my little brick classroom on the first day of 3rd grade, I knew I had found my life's calling. I started with 8 wonderful students and ended the year with 10. What a great way to start a teaching career! I have so many fond memories of this class... It was a year full of projects, MadLibs, and FUN! I will always remember each and every one of them... I can't believe they just finished 5th grade!

Paraguay

Asunción

Mba’éichapa! If they spoke Spanish, I'd probably be living there right now! I went to Brazil for the first time in 2001 on a LoveWorks missions trip through Point Loma. I fell in love with Rio's coastline, the smiling, friendly Brasilieros, and the slowness of life... We spent time in Sao Paolo, Rio de Janiero, and Campinas. When I was living in Paraguay, I ventured across the infamous Friendship Bridge many times to see Iguassu Falls.

I love this country! I first went to Mexico with my family, I'm sure, but the first time I remember being in Mexico is when I went with Project YES. Project YES was a short-term missions program through Point Loma Nazarene University (my alma mater) for high school students. I went every year as a high schooler, then in college, I led a group of students each year. I lived for that week during Easter break... Since then, I've been to Mexico for quick fun trips and a family trip to Ensenada for New Years 2007. Mexico has a special place in my heart - I hope to live there someday... Or at least see more of the country than just Baja California!

Me Querido Mexico...

Canada

The Canadian Atlantic Coast
El Costo Atlántico del Canada

Oh, Canada! My first experience with this peaceful nation was when I went to Toronto in 1999 for the Nazarene Youth Congress. It was a great experience, but luckily that wasn't all. I was blessed to have a Canadian roomate (Karen) when I lived in Paraguay. During the summer of 2005 I went to Eastern Canada with her. I was able to visit the beautiful provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. I even stood at the foot of the bridge to Prince Edward Island!

O, Canada!

Auberry

Ah, Auberry. I miss that little town! I grew up there, with the oak trees and the cows. It was a great place to grow up in. Good schools, good friends. I wasn't born there (I was born in Missouri) but I am definitely Auberrian at heart. In case you're wondering, Auberry is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills between Fresno and Yosemite, California. Go Chieftains! (My elementary school)

Ah, Auberry. Dale Chieftains! (My escuela primaria)
